These geometric Tile Paintings were originally sparked by a visit to the Tile Museum in Lisbon, Portugal where I marveled at a portion of a recovered geometric blue and white wall tile pattern dating back to the 1600’s that exhibited an amazing timelessness.   It looked to me more like a contemporary painting than a wall decoration.

I have wanted to revisited the color exercises of Josef Albers I was introduced to at Parsons.  I’m interested in further studying the interaction of colors placed next to each other, how color can create optical illusions and how color can evoke and define emotions.  I’ve also wanted to broaden my glaze palette with my clay work.  For this series I intentionally chose to work with straight lines, geometric shapes and patterns which not only pushed me out of my comfort zone but gave me a defined format to work on these investigations.

Some of these tiles are based on favorite paintings (Henri Rousseau’s Sleeping Gypsy).  Some of them are inspired from familiar patterns from my childhood and travels abroad.  Some of the patterns are derived from the different faceted stones I used in my former profession as s jeweler.   A few of these stoneware framed geometric tile studies serve as maquettes for much larger tile paintings which are informing me about scale.  I view all of them as experiments in learning about the energy and power of color.
